Bend's Community BikeShed(BCB) is a completely unique venture that believes in
the power of the bicycle to bring the community together. What began as a service learning project for Heart of Oregon Corps
youth has developed into a community-wide program where people can learn how to maintain and repair their own bikes while serving
the needs of the homeless, low-income and others who depend on their bikes for transportation.
 |
Bicycle repair and distribution-
BCB tools and equipment are available to use on a sliding scale fee so people of all ages can learn how to repair
and maintain their bikes; repairs and maintenance may be done for free for those who are homeless
Job training for youth-
our goal is to provide intensive bicycle repair training to 30 youth per year plus teach basic maintenance information
to another 100 youth per year
Bicycle safety/alternative transportation education-
with the help of Commute Options for Central Oregon and other organizations,
youth will learn bicycle safety and promote biking as a great form of transportation
Recycling Center-
BCB will work with community partners including the landfill to keep bicycles out of the dump - our goal is to repair, reuse
and then recycle parts as a last resort
|
BCB relies upon community volunteers from local bike shops, Americorps youth
through Heart of Oregon Corps and other dedicated individuals who provide bike repairs at our shop at 184 NE Franklin
Avenue and at mobile work stations that are brought out into the community for special events
We are currently in need of Bike equipment and tools(in good working order), Bike supplies(e.g. chains, tubes, cleaners),
Funds(to pay for training and whatever isn't donated - donations are tax - deductible!),
Volunteers - wide variety of tasks available!
